  1. Question: Does anyone know if there if a storage requirement for seeled Reels to be stored on their side or flat in Storage rooms? If there is a requirement do you know what standard lists the requirement? Thank-you for your help. C Black

    • There is no ESD Association document that addresses whether Reels should be stored on their side or flat. It would not be an ESD control issue. ANSI/ESD S20.20 requires that Packaging of ESD sensitive items be per Packaging standard ANSI/ESD S541.

      The general requirements are:
ANSI/ESD S541 section 6.1 Inside an EPA (ESD protected area) “Packaging used within an EPA (that satisfies the minimum requirements of ANSI/ESD S20.20) shall be:
      1. Low charge generation.
      2. Dissipative or conductive materials for intimate contact.”

ANSI/ESD S541 section 6.2 Outside an EPA “Transportation of sensitive products outside of an EPA shall require packaging that provides:
      1. Low charge generation.
      2. Dissipative or conductive materials for intimate contact.
      3. A structure that provides electrostatic discharge shielding.”

ANSI/ESD S541 Table 2. Summary of Protective Properties
      Protection: Low charging (antistatic)
Property: Materials that have reduced amounts of charge accumulation as compared with standard packaging materials.

      Protection: Dissipative or Conductive Resistance
Property: Provides an electrical path for charge to dissipate from the package.

      Protection: Discharge Shielding
Property: Protects packaged items from the effects of static discharge that are external to the package.
